The front office underwent a significant change on Monday when Lou Lamoriello announced that he will be stepping aside as the team's general manager and will be replaced by former general manager Ray Shero.Lamoriello will continue his role as team president while Shero will answer to him.Shero served as general manager of the Penguins between 2006-07 and 2013-14, leading the team to the playoffs every year, the Brock Nelson Jersey Eastern Conference Final three times and two Stanley Cup Finals. They won the Stanley Cup in 2008-09.He was fired following the 2013-14 season after the Penguins lost in the second round of the playoffs to the letting a 3-1 series lead slip away. The Penguins were always competitive under Shero's watch, but were unable to consistently develop younger players or put a championship caliber team around their two superstar centers, and . That led to a five-year run of postseason disappointments following their Stanley Cup run and ultimately led to the team replacing him with Jim Rutherford. Lamoriello also announced on Monday that there will be no compensation sent to Pittsburgh as a result of the hiring. Even though Shero had been fired by the Penguins he remained under contract with the team, which would have given them the option to seek draft pick compensation if they wanted.Monday's move is also the end of Lamoriello's run as the Devils' general manager, a position he held since 1987. During that time the Devils made the playoffs in 21 out of 27 seasons, won three Stanley Cups and played in two other Stanley Cup Finals. The past five seasons, however, have been the worst of the Lamoriello era even with a Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2012. The team has mi sed the playoffs entirely in four of the past five seasons, including each of the past three. Even worse than the lack of succe s on the ice is the fact the Devils are one of the oldest teams in the league, especially at forward, and have a glaring lack of young impact talent coming up through the farm system. Shero is going to have his work cut out for him and it's going to take something that never seemed to really happen under his watch in Pittsburgh: A lot of player development. Islanders Store Jersey
